Got a call from Optimum's automated system informing me that I had an outstanding balance of $140. Which was strange since I use them for internet service only and my bill is $50/month.

So I looked at my statement online and found a random charge of $80 labeled "balance transfer". I called Customer Service and asked "What is this charge? Balance transfer from what, from where, from who??" And although they initially insisted it was a valid charge, after an hour of looking into it and finding no explanation, they acknowledged that it appeared out of thin air. However they claimed not to have the authority to reverse the charge but that they would submit a claim to their manager and I would get a call and subsequent credit in a few days.

Never got a call aside from the daily automated calls warning me about my overdue balance. A few days later my internet was disconnected. It was night time and no customer service agents were available so I had to pay the balance in full if I wanted my internet restored, which I did.

I could probably spend half a day on the phone with them and get it refunded or go to their Brooklyn office and wait on a line that resembles the DMV, but I will skip the aggravation and let them beat me out of the $80 plus a $10 late fee for the $80 I never owed in the first place. I just want to vent about it here to get some piece of mind.

Monetary Loss: $80.

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Companies rely on people like you who will pay an erroneous charge in order to avoid a hassle, etc. You should never pay for something you do not owe.

Period. They won. You lost.

You are much too willing to buckle under in order to not be inconvenienced by the loss of internet. Symptomatic of today's youth.
